Sellout Video Games with PeanutButterGamer

In 1988, a film called Mac and Me was released to wide criticism. It flopped at the box office, critics panned it for its cheap imitations of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and it won two Golden Raspberry Awards. It even has a 0% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But one of the worst things about it was the obscene amount of product placements from McDonald’s and Coca-Cola. The fact MAC was the alien’s name as a poorly veiled nod to the fast food restaurant and Ronald McDonald made a cameo (earning him a Worst Star Golden Raspberry award) was bad enough. But the film just sucked.

But it’s not just movies that suffer because of blatant advertising. Peanut Butter Gamer produced an episode on his YouTube channel dedicated to “sell-out video games” where brands were emblazoned all over the place. He omitted titles such as Pepsiman and Cool Spot (because who hasn’t made one about those?) and opted for more obscure titles.

As usual, PBG uses his off-kilter humour to makes these games seem almost plausible in today’s hyper-capitalist culture. I’m starting to wonder how Amazon hasn’t put themselves in a game about… drones? Yeah, that’d work. Jeff Bezos loves those things. But I digress. Brands include Gatorade, Snickers, and Pizza Hut. That’s a whole lot of sugar.
