Anbernic are at it again but with something “new”. The Chinese handheld manufacturer has teased a new device, the RG 55G1, with the slogan “A New Core, A New Frontier”. As you can see from the thumbnail, they’re offering three colourways (Indigo, Retro Gray, and Black) and perhaps a Snapdragon processor?
The naming convention is also different, showing 55 in reference to the 5.5 inch screen and G1 potentially nodding to either the Snapdragon G2 Gen 1 (G2G1), or the Snapdragon G1 Gen 2 (G1G2) as Retro Handhelds suggested. According to Retro Catalog, the G2G1 will be in the upcoming TRIMUI Brick Hammer Pro U while the G1G2 is in the Retroid Pocket Classic. Whichever one it may be, that’d be a significant step up as a lot of people have wanted the company to move away from its trifecta of Allwinner, MediaTek, and RockChip which just aren’t as powerful for higher-end devices.
Looks wise, it’s very similar to the older Retroid Pocket devices with some pointing to the 3 and 4 as the main inspirations, while others have noticed similarities with the Switch Lite. Needless to say this isn’t an original design but if you didn’t care before, you won’t now.
There’s a lot we don’t know about it yet so when the specs are revealed, I’ll update this post and offer some more thoughts.
