I had a digital pet back in maybe 1998 or 1999. It was a dinosaur one and mine died a few times but always came back to life until I got rid of it. I couldn’t afford a Tamagotchi but, by the looks of planet clue’s video, I could if I wanted to.
planet clue examined the very long history of Tamagotchi, from its debut peaks to a lot of Japanese exclusives and wild iterations, and ending with a severe case of Americanisation and licencing slop—think of a brand, and they’ll have a Tamagotchi for it.
I don’t have the time to look after a real pet or even a plant, let alone a little digital one that can’t actually die if you don’t care for it. But my god do some of those Tamagotchi look cool.
