I found this video by Retro Crisis on ARES, an open source multi-system emulator. While many of us who emulate games use software like Retroarch, ARES is a lot newer and focuses “accuracy and preservation”, according to the website. It isn’t 100% ready for all platforms, with certain systems marked as “experimental” and if you go into any of them on the site, you get a list of the games which are “completable” or unverified.
Feature-wise, ARES includes:
- a native multi-platform UI
- the ability to synchronize audio and video output at the same time
- save states
- fast forward and rewind
- shaders(!!)
- colour correction
- easy controller mapping
You might not want to ditch your current multi-platform emulator just yet if you have lots of games across a lot of systems but if you’re looking to play Game Boy, Nintendo 64, or Sega Mega Drive for example, give it a go. ARES is available on both Windows, Linux and Mac so if you try it, let us know what you think!
