RetroAchievements has changed “softcore” to “casual” and I like that name

I’ve been in my RetroAchievements bag since the start of the year. I’ve been collecting points for years but without really concentrating on it. But this year, with my growing interest in playing video games, I’ve gone after the points while enjoying a lot of games I’d never even heard of before (and some I didn’t like to balance things out).

There were two categories of achievements: hardcore for people who basically play as “intended” (no cheats, no save states, that sort of thing) and softcore for people who can use cheats, save states. etc. But recently, RetroAchievements changed the name of softcore to casual and I’m down for it. I think it’s related to the more “adult” connotations around the words but casual fits that style of gaming so much better. It really is about casual play. You don’t need to bust your balls for achievements if you go for them. If you want to use a save state, there you go, or any number of cheats. It’s still a controversial topic and hardcore players never miss an opportunity to criticise and say “you do you!” but there’ll always be a divide with something in gaming communities (even the forum post I linked had disagreements over the name change and divide between hardcore and casual).

Anyway, I’m keeping it cazh with my viddy G’s and you should too (I will never say those words again, I’m so sorry)
