I found this funny Reddit post of a Usenet post from 1995. The original poster, Wes O’Neel, was unhappy with his new PSX and warned people against paying $500 without ever having actually played one
to see if it was to their liking.

If you’re thinking of getting a Playstation, don’t make the mistake I did and end up wasting $500 without ever having actually played one to see if it’s to you’re liking.
I bought a PSX, extra controller, memory card, NHL Faceoff, NFL Gameday, and Battle Arena Toshinden. I also rented quite a few games for it. The result: I’m pissed off at all the hype which just isn’t true.
NHL Faceoff is a big joke. It’s not even close to being as good as NHL 96 for Genesis. The game simply is not fun to play and so easy you wouldn’t want to play it past the first game. NFL Gameday is nearly a copy of Sports Talk Football for Genesis, and not as good.
It’s total crap really. STF offers much better control, and unlike this game you can actually see what’s going on. Try throwing a pass and you can’t even see if you’re player has caught it, which the control for cataching(sp?) is a joke in itself.
I won’t even mention the other total joke games except Battle Arena Toshinden. This game is pretty cool, but now i’m sitting here wondering how I could have payed $500 and this is the only good game for it.
All the playstation people who are claiming how great PSX is just can’t see how bad it really is, and keep pushing it off as the greatest thing ever because they have to justify the wasted money.
Even 3do Road Rash beats the PSX version, and it’s 2-3 years old now!!
PSX simply doesn’t have any games that match the great 3do games like Foes of Ali, D, Need for Speed, PO’ed, etc. Nothing even comes close!
While Starfighter wasn’t for me, it still beats Warhawk for PSX hands down. Oh, and don’t forget Wing Commander III.
Sure, 3do has a lot of bad games, but it has a few really great games. BAT is the only thing on PSX that does anything for me. My one hope is a few RPG’s might make it to PSX, but I haven’t seen anything, and i’m sure the situation will be as bad as on 3do.
Oh, the memory card deal sucks too. 128k and it barely hold anything for some reason. You need more than half the card for saving almost anything! The CD player is a little better than 3do, but who cares, I didn’t pay $500 to listen to my cd’s, that’s why I have a stereo…
This guy really liked his 3DO. I wonder how Wes felt over time or whether he felt more affinity with the other consoles of that generation. Or maybe video games peaked with the 3DO for him, who knows! Wes, if you’re reading, get in touch!
