Choco Mountain: The History of Mario Kart 64's Most Infamous Track

The sheer dedication and meticulous planning are endearing. Mario Kart 64 is probably my favourite racing games of all time and one of the reasons I don’t have the discipline to do speedruns is because my go-to character is Bowser. He’s way to bulky to gain any kind of speed and I can’t bear to part with him.

On the surface, Choco Mountain is straightforward to navigate. Just a brown loop with a foggy sky. Oh, and those boulders in the middle. Perfect opportunity for a speedrun fascination. Summoning Salt’s latest video documented the history of Choco Mountain amongst the speedrunner community. Records have been set and broken since the game was released in Europe and the US in 1997 and each major shortcut is discussed. My favourite is the last one, named the Weathertenko. I won’t reveal what it involves or where its name comes from. That’s what the video is for.
