Adam Neely on the Nintendo-fication of jazz

Yesterday, I wrote about The 8-Bit Big Band’s stunning cover of Dire Dire Docks. Well, I found out about it because of the above video by Adam Neely. He examined the connections between video game music (especially by Nintendo) and jazz and how they’ve been intricately linked for decades. He also put forward a good idea: that video game music is the future of jazz music. I’m all for it and, to be honest, we’re kinda already there in popular culture, maybe more so than in academic circles. But who cares about stuffy music classes—there are games to be played and music to be made!
