When Pocket Monsters, better known around the world as Pokémon, debuted in Japan in 1996, its creators Game Freak had no idea that they’d define and redefine the term “phenomenon” for years to come. The first games were a gaming and pop culture revelation, despite being rushed to completion and riddled with bugs. Their sequels, Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal were supposed to be the last games of the series. Imagine that! Now, Pokémon is as famous as anything you can imagine in the history of mankind. Pikachu is a household name and Game Freak has made a lot of money for Nintendo in the process (even if the quality of the games have polarised critics and fans alike).

I could write so much more in this introduction but you can read all the articles on this category page instead.

This category page covers the scope of Pokémon gaming news, competitive battling, documentaries, interviews, and op-eds; from Wolfe Glick to Wobbuffet.

The Gamer compiled a list of their 10 most historically important JRPGs. I’ve not played the top 5 so I can’t comment. In fact, I’ve only played 2 from the list and you can probably guess what they are.

TimDrawsStuff redesigned the Alolan starters from Pokémon Sun/Moon/Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon in the style of Paper Mario and posted them on Twitter. There’s a YouTube video of them too if you want to see them animated. Very cute.
