I’m working my way through a backlog of my favourite SDGQ speedruns so bear with me. The next one on the list is Virtual Boy Wario Land, the follow-up to Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, exclusive to the Virtual Boy. As you’ll notice, swordsmankirby isn’t using an actual Virtual Boy to complete this run nor do we see the infamous red and black colour scheme. That’s because this is running via a Virtual Boy emulator, much to the pleasure of everyone involved as headaches just aren’t it when you’re speedrunning.
I think the coolest thing about the run is being able to see the capability of the device with its 3D environments—going not just left and right but to the front and back of the space you’re in. Aside from all its troubles, the Virtual Boy had some great ideas and Virtual Boy Wario Land shows them off really nicely. You also get to enjoy Wario’s bulldozing mechanics and the various hats that give him unique powers, which I actually prefer to Mario’s bag of tricks. That’s right, I said it!
So if you like Wario, speedrunning, or the Virtual Boy, you’re in for a treat here. And it’s only 25 minutes long so it won’t take up much of your day. Win-win I’d say.
