Super Sonic 64 is the 3D Sonic we were never gonna get but could have loved if we did

By the time Sonic Adventure was released for the Dreamcast in 1998, Super Mario 64 was already 2.5 years old. Adventure was Sonic’s first proper foray into 3D and it left a lot to be desired in terms of graphics and gameplay. But what if lived in an alternate reality where Sonic didn’t have to wait until 2001 until we got one of his games on a Nintendo console and it looked better? Super Sonic 64 offers a glimpse into that other dimension.

This Sonic mod was created by theison and the latest version includes Shadow. The above video shows a brief playthrough on the first level and it might look jarring at first but Sonic’s design, speed, and movement look really good to me. Yes, he’s quite stiff but you have to bear in mind this is 1996 graphics and the best comparison we could have to a 3D Sonic of that time was… Sonic R. Now I’d love to see a speedrun of this.
