Vircon32 is a 32-bit virtual console, created from scratch by Carra. The idea behind the project is to make the system “as simple as possible, but still having enough features to support full, elaborate games”. To play Vircon32 games, you need an emulator which is available on PC or through RetroArch meaning you can play games on a handheld emulator too.
There are over 30 games, both default and community-made, and they range from SimpleTennis (a Pong clone) to Tic Tac Toe, 2048, Triple Bubble (a Puzzle Bobble clone), and Fierce Soldier (a Contra-style game).
While Vircon32 is mainly software focused, Carra did try their hands at making physical carts and a console using a Raspberry Pi and some 3D printing (you can get the relevant files to try yourself on the GitHub repo).
There’s a lot of focus on the hardware side of emulation with a TON of different options available. What I like about Vircon32 is that it shifts things towards the software and creating simple games with replay value.
