Wolfe Glick assessed Pokémon Sword and Shield and asked whether it was as bad as we thought. Despite selling nearly 25m copies and generally positive reviews, there have been a fair few criticisms from older players (including those controversial trees).
Here’s my take: they were the most fun I’ve had playing Pokémon since Gen 2. It was also my first foray into VGC and getting into all the related content which I’ve thoroughly enjoyed. Sword/Shield were by no means perfect games and I’m not ready to replay them just yet but I can’t think of anything that really annoyed me about them. Folks wanting better/harder Pokémon games should look to ROM hacks and mods rather than Game Freak. Or wear a blindfold.
