PC

Damn, when did PC builds that look like fish tanks for components become the norm?

I’ve been on a bit of a Reddit binge this week and something keeps cropping up are people’s desk setups and PC builds. One thing I’ve noticed in a lot of them is their choice of PC towers (example) and how they all seem to be black or white and have a window to see what’s inside.

Now, I’m only 35 so I don’t want to sound like an old codger and I haven’t had a functioning PC tower for decades but seriously: when did this become the trend? I’m kind of into it as I love transparent/translucent tech but I also don’t care to see the spinning fans or the heatsink or the RAM chips. I do like the lighting—especially if it’s bisexual—but I’d also hope for some aquatic life in there to really shake things up. I featured a copper steampunk build on our cousin site, LOGiCFACE, and I’d be interested to see someone try an aquarium build.1

Towers with clear windows aren’t new (you can see above—in reverse and with a handful of motion sickness) and Reddit has algorithms to make sure you see the same things over and over but even on YouTube, they have them. I guess that late 90s/early 00s transparent era is back in a way. Do you have a tower with a window into its soul? Let me know in the comments.

  1. Obviously it wouldn’t be a real one so maybe a screen that projects moving pictures of fish? Or some kind of lenticular effect? Hologram maybe? ↩︎
