gbs-master: a free tool that turns Game Boy sound files into Game Boy album-style ROMs

If you missed out on the Pokémon Game Boy Jukebox, there might be an alternative for you. gbs-master is a free tool that turns Game Boy sound files into Game Boy ROMs (.gb) music player from any GBS (Game Boy Sound) file, with optional playlists and cover art.

It’s not as plug-and-play as the official Pokémon jukebox and you’ll need to source the GBS files yourself if you know where to look1 but it’s free and the instructions are in the GitHub repo. So far the following games have been tested and work with the gbs-master:

  • Pokémon Blue
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
  • Harvest Moon GB
  • Pokémon Trading Card Game
  • Dragon Warrior Monsters

I may test this and I’ll add any other games I see working in this way. The best thing about gbs-master—besides the cost being free—is that you get the original sound direct from the hardware and because it’s open source, it’s customisable if you forked the project and knew how to do that.

  1. Apparently it can be hard to extract them directly from game ROMs so Google will be your friend ↩︎
