So we have a release date for the Nintendo Switch 2 now (5th June), a controversial set of prices, and a whole lot of games (at equally ridiculous prices). But I’m not here to talk about all of that specifically. After the dust settled on the throng of new games that Nintendo shoved in our faces on 2nd April, I realised that nothing compelled me to buy it. I’ve never been a Mario guy and the only RPG that might have caught my attention—Bravely Default: Flying Fairy—isn’t worth £400+ to gain access to.
If you’ve seen some of my posts from the last couple of years or so, I’ve bought a lot of consoles—handhelds and TV consoles. My magpie tendencies know no bounds and I’ve done little to subdue them. Because of that, I have access to thousands of games from the last 30+ years and I made a commitment to play through a selection of those of which a small fraction come from the Switch’s back catalogue. There’s just no room for anything the Switch 2 could offer me.
And boy did they offer! I’ve never seen so many big titles in a Nintendo Direct; it was arguably too much! But none of them grabbed me enough to pull the trigger (unless that proverbial gun was used in a bank robbery and it was actually a Virtua Cop arcade light gun). That’s not because they didn’t look good but I didn’t know a lot of them, they were likely 25+ hour games, and/or they were from genres I’d never play voluntarily. Nothing to break my game backlog anyway.
I also like to hyperfixate with my games. I’m currently playing my fifth Final Fantasy game (FFVI) after beating I, III, IV, and V this year. I’m locked in and anything else would be a distraction. Except my ongoing playthrough of Breath of Fire IV. And maybe Sonic 3 which I started in January. And I do need to finish Brilliant Diamond. And Kirby’s Dream Land 3. You see my problem. I’m having way too much fun with 30+ year old games to be spending £70 a time for new stuff. I haven’t even mentioned my mostly untouched collection of Switch games. No, I shall wait until the sales give me an offer I can’t refuse.
