Nintendo and SEGA had an epic battle for gaming supremacy in the early-to-mid 90s but Nintendo regained their lead and saw their rivals off for the most part. But in 1995, Sony, after an infamous failed collab with Nintendo, unveiled the PlayStation and changed the gaming industry forever.

Sony has sold around 580m PlayStation consoles since then. That early rejection did more good than harm, it seems.
