A random thought popped into my head after seeing Dunkey’s latest Wario video: what were his origins? I knew his debut was in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins and the general concept but none of the bits in between. Luckily, a ton of people had this covered TheMentok’s video (above) covering the fundamentals, including gorgeous footage of the DX version of SML2.
But what I didn’t know was that Wario featured in Yoshi’s Island DS which took place when Mario and the gang were babies. And there was a 1993 comic called Mario vs Wario, published in issue 44 of Nintendo Power. It seemed that they were good friends as kids but Mario’s happy memories were nightmares for Wario who saw it all differently and saw him as a bully. There’s always that one friend, right? But as the comic goes on, Mario calls him a wimp(?) and to drop the grudge. I’m starting to side with Wario here…
Anyway, I won’t relay the entire video so you should watch it and immerse yourself in the twisted world of the man in yellow and purple.
